Tuna Australia appoints Neil Hughes as CEO

Tuna Australia has appointed Neil Hughes as its new Chief Executive Officer, ushering in a new chapter for the organisation and Australia’s tuna industry.

Based in Mooloolaba, Mr Hughes brings more than 35 years of fisheries management, policy and international negotiation experience to the role.

He will lead Tuna Australia as the industry continues to navigate a range of opportunities and challenges, including sustainability, market access, workforce needs and evolving consumer expectations.

“I’m excited about what lies ahead for Australia’s tuna industry,” Mr Hughes said.

Mr Hughes has worked across industry, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

He has represented Australia at major regional fisheries management organisations, including the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna, the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.

Tuna Australia Chair Ian Cartwright welcomed the appointment.

“Neil has extensive leadership experience and a strong understanding of the fisheries, agribusiness and seafood sectors,” Mr Cartwright said.

“His deep knowledge of the issues facing the sector and his strong relationships across industry and government will be invaluable.”

Hughes succeeds David Ellis, who has served as CEO since Tuna Australia was established in 2016.

“David has played a pivotal role in establishing Tuna Australia as a respected voice for the industry,” Mr Cartwright said.

“We thank him for his leadership and commitment over the past decade and wish him all the best for the future.”
